Summer Safety Tips

Summer brings the sun, the heat, barbeques, pool parties and lots of fun, but it can also bring harm if we are not careful. Keep reading to be aware of the common potential hazards you can be exposed to during summer and how to overcome them!

Home Summer Safety Tips

Looking to do a classic summer cookout? Make sure of the following before organizing a summer party!

  • Keep your grill 10-feet away from the house
  • Keep your grill clean from any grease and debris. 
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill.
  • Check for any propane leaks.
  • Be ready to put out a fire. Having a fire extinguisher nearby.       
  • Never leave your grill unattended. 

If you are planning to include fireworks in your party make sure to...

  • Obey local and estate laws regarding the use of fireworks. 
  • Read the fireworks labels and instructions before starting. 
  • Always monitored children while using fireworks.
  • Not be intoxicated.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher or other fire suppression tools nearby.
  • Keep a safe distance at all times. 

Personal Summer Safety Tips

If you are planning to spend the day outside here are some tips to keep in mind.

  • Hydrate throughout the day by drinking fluids. Always drink your water!
  • Try not to stay outside at the peek heat times, or, if not possible, try to find some shade.
  • Avoid demanding exercise on very hot days.
  • Apply sunscreen around 30 min before sun exposure. Don't forget to reapply through the day!
  • Avoid areas that are bug-infested and use bug repellant. 
  • Never leave your children or pet unattended in a car. 

Ready for a day at the pool or the beach? 

  • Never leave a child unattended even if they reach the floor or if they are able to swim. 
  • Never swim on your own.
  • If your child doesn't know how to swim, it is always a great idea to sign him/her up for swimming classes. 
  • Be aware of your surroundings and your capabilities. 
  • Remember that swimming in a pool and on the beach are very different. 
  • Be aware of sea/ocean currents, especially undertow! 
  • As mentioned above, hydrate and apply sunscreen through the day.
